Claudia Levy
Silk Art By Claudia
Claudia Levy has been painting on silk since the
late 1980s, inspired by a weekend course with Shirley Waxman
at G Street Fabrics. She paints with dyes and fabric paints
to create scarves, wall hangings, floor screens and silk-faced
cards, as well as dresses, jackets, shawls and other wearable
art.
Her work is shown year-round at the Torpedo Factory Arts
Center in Alexandria, where she has been a member since 1989
of the Potomac Craftsmen Gallery. Her painting has also been
exhibited at the Mansion at Strathmore Hall, Creative Partners
in Bethesda, Artisans in McLean, the League of Maryland Craftsmen
Gallery in Annapolis and elsewhere.
Her scarf-hanging “Currents” is part of the
collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s Renwick
Gallery of the National Museum of American Art. Her silk-faced
cards were sold at the Renwick’s gift shop.
A resident of Bethesda, she was raised in Montgomery County.
She attended Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and Pennsylvania
State University. She retired in 2003 after 38 years as a
reporter and editor with The Washington Post.
She has served on the boards of Potomac Craftsmen Gallery
and the Congressional Chorus.
