Julie B. Booth
Artist Statement
Since 1997, I have created increasingly stylized and simplified
figurative wall pieces and sculptures. My work has taken two
distinct directions—the first, stuffed wall figures
made from my own hand block printed fabrics. I further embellish
these figures with hand appliqué, stitching and bead
embroidery. Often these simplified figures take on both “human”
and “animal” characteristics, blurring the line
between the two.
The other direction is sculptures built around a wire armature.
In the “Chair Series”, I have appliquéd
raw edged fabrics with multiple layers of hand stitching and
the addition of beadwork. Each piece has a human face…adding
the human element yet again but continuing to blur the lines
between what is human and “non” human. Some pieces
have the look of altars while others contain environmental
elements. I like to think of these pieces as visual poems.
